Kauai Changed My Mind: How a 4‑Night Trip Made It My New Favorite Hawaiian Island

Kauai surprised me — in the best possible way.

I first visited the Garden Isle nearly 20 years ago when my kids were young. It was March, it was cold and rainy, and my memories were mostly gray skies and soggy beach towels. I remembered the blowhole, the chickens, a few scenic drives, and not much else. Honestly, I left thinking Kauai just wasn’t for me.

Fast forward to April 2026. My husband and I booked a very last‑minute trip — just four nights, three full days — to give Kauai another chance.

And you know what? I fell completely in love. Kauai is now my new favorite Hawaiian island.

If you’re considering a trip to Kauai — whether for beaches, hiking, food, or pure relaxation — here’s exactly what we experienced, what surprised me, and how I help clients plan the perfect Kauai vacation.

Arrival Day: Sunshine, Sea Turtles & Settling Into Poipu

We landed around 1:30 p.m. local time and made a quick stop at Walmart near the airport to stock our kitchenette with breakfast items, snacks, water, and drinks. From there, it was a short drive to Poipu, where we stayed at the Sheraton Kauai Villas — right across the street from the full‑service Sheraton Kauai Resort on the beach.

Jet lag was hitting hard, so we walked down to Poipu Beach for golden hour to help us stay awake. The light on the south shore is magical — warm, soft, and glowing across the sand and water.

And then came the moment that instantly shifted my mood: the Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu) arriving to rest on the beach.

Why sea turtles come to Poipu Beach

Poipu is one of Kauai’s most reliable turtle‑spotting beaches. The honu come ashore at sunset to rest overnight, returning to the ocean at sunrise. They’re protected by law, so visitors must keep a respectful distance — but watching them settle into the sand is unforgettable.

We turned in early, ready to explore the island with fresh eyes.

Day 1: Waimea Canyon — “The Grand Canyon of the Pacific”

With the time change, we were up early and enjoyed a sunrise beach walk before heading out on our self‑guided driving tour of Waimea Canyon and Kokeʻe State Park.

The weather was perfect — sunny skies and spring‑like temperatures.

Driving Waimea Canyon on Your Own

We chose to rent a car rather than join a group tour, and I’m so glad we did. It gave us the freedom to stop where we wanted, linger when we felt like it, and enjoy the views without rushing.

There are four major lookouts along the drive, each more breathtaking than the last. Your parking pass from the first stop covers all the others — just leave it on your dashboard.

The final lookout, at the literal end of the road, offers a sweeping view over the Nā Pali Coast. It’s the closest you can get by car, and it’s spectacular.

To get even closer, you’d need to hike, take a boat tour, or book a helicopter — all incredible options for longer trips. But for our short stay, this was perfect.

We made it back to Poipu in time for a sunset dinner, relaxed and happy.

Day 2: Beach, Pool & A Monk Seal Comedy Show

Vacation mode officially activated.

We grabbed beach chairs around 8 a.m. and settled in for a relaxing day. Another morning walk brought one of the most entertaining encounters of the trip: two Hawaiian monk seals lounging on the sand.

One was clearly trying to nap. The other was clearly trying to play. It felt like watching siblings — the younger poking, the older getting increasingly annoyed. We couldn’t stop laughing. Watch the video linked on the right!

We swam in the ocean, but it’s important to note:  Kauai’s waves can be strong. Always swim at lifeguarded beaches, pay attention to posted conditions, and never turn your back on the ocean.

Day 3: North Shore Road Trip — Wailua, Hanalei & Haʻena

We headed north through Wailua, Princeville, and Hanalei toward Haʻena State Park — home to the famous Kalalau Trail.

Important: Haʻena State Park Requires Reservations

Parking reservations open 30 days in advance at midnight Hawaii time, and they sell out quickly. Because our trip was last‑minute, we couldn’t secure one. The alternative is to park at a lower lot and take the shuttle — a great option if hiking is a priority.

Even without hiking, the drive was stunning.

Highlights of the North Shore

    • Wailua Falls — lush, green, and incredibly close to the road

    • Hanalei — charming, quiet, and framed by dramatic emerald peaks

    • Shave ice — a must, and we found one of the best spots

We returned to Poipu in time for sunset, tired but happy — and even with the classic North Shore traffic on the way back, the scenery made every slow stretch feel worth it.

Where We Ate: Kauai Food Highlights

Food is always a big question for Hawaii travelers. Here’s where we stopped — the good, the great, and the “probably wouldn’t return.”
Puka Dog (Poipu)

A Kauai classic. Toasted bun, garlic sauce, tropical relishes, lilikoi mustard. My favorite combo: Polish sausage + spicy garlic sauce + coconut relish + lilikoi mustard. Don’t skip the lemonade.
8E88 Thai & Poke (Food truck court)

Fresh, flavorful tuna poke bowl with sesame, spicy mayo, and furikake. A perfect post‑Waimea snack.
Aloha Sweet Delights (Kaumualii Hwy)

Malasadas, coconut hand pies, and pastries galore. A great stop for breakfast treats.
Keoki’s Paradise (Koloa)

Open‑air dining surrounded by palms, tiki torches, and koi ponds. I had the grilled ono with Hawaiian sweet potatoes — delicious. My husband loved the marlin fish & chips.
Tahiti Nui (Hanalei)

Featured on Diners, Drive‑Ins and Dives, and the reason we stopped — but honestly, the food and service were disappointing. With so many great options on Kauai, I wouldn’t return.
Wishing Well Shave Ice (Hanalei)

A beautiful setting with picnic tables and mountain views. I ordered the piña colada shave ice with macadamia nut ice cream and a snow cap — heavenly.
Porky’s Kauai (Koloa)

Simple menu, great flavors. We both ordered the #4: jasmine rice + kalua pork + sweet & hot BBQ sauce + pineapple. Friendly staff and live music nearby.
Daddy O’s (Lihue)

Our final stop on the way to the airport — and such a good choice. Their coconut macadamia nut pancakes were fluffy, rich, and full of that classic Hawaiian flavor you crave on your last morning. It’s the kind of breakfast that makes you wish you had one more day on the island.

Sandals Wedding - Jamaica

Anne helped us with our son's destination wedding at Sandals Dunn's River in Jamaica.  We had the best time.  The resort is gorgeous and the food was really good.  We really appreciate Anne's help with coordinating travel for those that attended the wedding.  We look forward to booking a European River Cruise with her, as well as our other son's honeymoon (he proposed in Jamaica while we were there)!

Jamaica Getaway
Jamaica Getaway

5-stars! Anne helped me find a place for a long weekend getaway with my husband. She listened to the details I was looking for and suggested The Hideaway at Royalton. We really enjoyed the stay. It was exactly what I was looking for when I set out on planning the trip, but I’ve never been to an all inclusive or Jamaica so I wouldn’t have found it without her. The property was beautiful and the view from our room was spectacular. We really enjoyed the buffet dining room. The steak there was every bit as good as the steak we had at the steakhouse.

We had such an amazing experience in Costa Rica, thanks to Anne! She was nothing but great and super helpful with all of our questions and concerns. We were traveling international for the first time and she made the process very easy! We can’t wait to book our next one!
