Dos and Don'ts For Your First Trip to Italy

Your first experience in Italy is an exciting and enriching adventure. From the bustling streets of Rome to the romantic canals of Venice and everything in between, Italy has so much to offer any traveler. However, to make the most of your trip and grasp the full experience of the Italian way of life, it's essential to be aware of certain dos and don'ts. As a travel advisor, I love providing my clients with tips (and helpful dos and don'ts) for their trips from first-hand experience from my visits. Here are just a few of the tips I provide my clients:

Dos:

  1. Learn A Few Basic Italian Phrases: While many Italians in tourist areas speak English, making an effort to learn basic Italian phrases shows respect for the local culture. Simple greetings, 'please,' 'thank you,' and asking for directions in Italian can go a long way in fostering positive interactions.

  2. Dress Stylishly and Modestly: Italians are known for their impeccable sense of style. While comfort is essential, dressing well is appreciated, especially when visiting churches and upscale restaurants. Additionally, be mindful of covering shoulders and knees when entering religious sites.

  3. Enjoy the Culinary Culture: Italy is absolute heaven for food enthusiasts. And even if you don't consider yourself a foodie, meals in Italy are to die for. Be sure to indulge in local specialties like pasta, pizza, gelato, and regional wines. Explore local markets and savor the flavors.

  4. Embrace the Art of Espresso: Coffee culture is sacred in Italy. Enjoy a quick shot of espresso at the bar, standing up, for a truly Italian experience.Italy Travel Advisor

Don'ts:

  1. Avoid Rushing Meals: Italian meals are meant to be enjoyed slowly, allowing time for conversation and savoring each course. Rushing through a meal is considered impolite. Take your time and relish the experience. I have to admit, this was tougher to embrace than I expected - but one of my FAVORITE parts of Italy - the slow meal.

  2. Don't Expect Dinner Before 8:00 PM: Italians typically dine later in the evening. Restaurants may not be open for dinner before 7:30 or 8:00 PM. Plan your meals accordingly to align with local dining customs.

  3. Don't Overpack Your Day With Activities: Be prepared to experience one to two new things each day, but don't pack in so much activity that you can't enjoy a leisurely stroll through the alleyways and cobblestone streets. Grabbing an unexpected gelato or stopping in a quaint little gift shop is half the experience.

  4. Don't Be Afraid To Talk to the Locals: Asking your local private guide, hotel concierge or shop owner about their favorite restaurant or place to grab gelato is one of the best things you can do. Locals are often excited to recommend the best authentic restaurant in the area and are thrilled to offer a few pointers to you about your tripFirst Trip to Italy

While Italy is filled with history, art, and delectable cuisine, you will get to experience a lot of it's charm by taking it slow and easy. By knowing these dos and don'ts above, you'll get to enjoy a smoother travel experience during your first trip to Italy.

I can't wait to help you on your first experience to Italy!

Ever since my husband and I got married in Mexico, we made a promise to ourselves to plan romantic getaways and adults only vacations every year, even after we had kids. Our favorite destinations so far are the Hawaiian Islands, Sandals Resorts - specifically in Jamaica, the Bahamas and Antigua  - and our unforgettable Alaskan Cruise. I’m passionate about helping other couples plan time away from ...  Read More >>>

Paris Anniversary Perfection
Paris Anniversary Perfection

Thank you for your hard work on our anniversary trip to Paris. It was absolutely fabulous in every way. It was a perfect balance of planned activities and free time to roam and explore. The hotel you recommended was so perfect. The location was ideal and I highly recommend it as well. You're right - buying tickets in advance for important activities is the only way to go - but also finding some amazing gems while roaming the streets - true perfection. Picking a favorite is so hard.

Italy was a Dream Trip
Italy was a Dream Trip

It was so wonderful to have an Italian guide who shared so much history throughout! Not only did he talk about the historical sites, but we also learned about the farmland, lifestyles and so much more during our travel from city to city! In one day, we were able to see the Colosseum and the Vatican because of our private bus and the skip-the-line tours that were reserved for us. We could have never done that on our own. Lines were wrapped around every building and most of those sites limit how many people enter each day so tickets are difficult to get. We added days on before and after the tour. Jessica handled EVERY DETAIL (scheduled our hotels, train rides and provided transfers) which would have taken me days to research and plan out. She checked on us throughout our trip to make sure it was everything we had dreamed of. And it was!

Amazing first time at Secrets Maroma Beach
Amazing first time at Secrets Maroma Beach

Jessica Pratt planned the best vacation for our family! We went to Secrets Maroma Beach Cancun in July 2024. We had never been out of the country before so we had no idea how to plan a trip. She made it so easy because she did EVERYTHING, from the minute we arrived at the airport to leave until we arrived at the airport to come home and even more. She gave us details for the entire week we would be gone! We all know vacations can have bumps in them that cannot be avoided but they can be especially scary when you're out of the country! We had an emergency situation while we were there and Jessica was just a call away and was texting with me throughout the day and even into the night when we made it back to our resort! She held our hand the entire way. Jessica absolutely made our time away amazing even when there were bumps! We will absolutely be using her again!
